Online Experimentation and Simulation in a Signal Processing Virtual Laboratory

This paper describes a remote-experimentation project that is part of a virtual laboratory (VLab). The activity is organized around a spectrum analyzer and a function generator, as real devices mirrored into Web (Internet) nodes. A logically structured replica of the Advantest spectrum analyzer is realized on a LabVIEW platform, in a client-server approach. The application also integrates several other modules – as function generator control, chat, user authentication, and video broadcast of images from the device display. The corresponding server modules are distributed between the VLAB nodes in Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania, and Arizona State University (ASU), U.S.A. Students from worldwide locations and enrolled in different programs with different on-the-subject knowledge levels can access the spectrum analyzer at ASU, while enjoying increased schedule freedom.
